Honoring An Athens Hero: A Memorial Day Tribute to Dr. Gerald Thomas

 In Athens Hero, Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, we at Plumber Pro Service & Drains pause to honor not only the brave souls who have fallen but also the living veterans and active service members who continue to protect our freedoms. Among these heroes stands Dr. Gerald Thomas, a distinguished member of the Greatest Generation whose quiet courage and dedication to service have left an indelible mark on our community in Athens, Georgia.

As a World War II aficionado, I was profoundly moved to learn that our longtime optometrist, Dr. Gerald Thomas, was a true war hero. His humility was such that he seldom spoke of his military achievements, a common trait among many WWII veterans who experienced the horrors of battle. It wasn’t until his funeral that I learned of his remarkable service, a testament to his modesty and the deep respect he held for his comrades.

Gerald Thomas earned the Bronze Star for his “meritorious service during the period 25 Sept. ’44 to 8 May ’45 in France and Germany in connection with military operations against the enemy of the United States.” His son, Jerry, fondly recalled how his father rarely spoke of his wartime experiences, choosing instead to share light-hearted memories of Paris. This reticence was characteristic of many veterans, who often kept their stories close to their hearts.

Born in Stuart, Florida, Gerald was introduced to optometry by his uncle, Walter Wilkinson of Eastman. After passing the state boards, a chance suggestion led him to Athens, a city he quickly fell in love with despite not knowing a single person. Here, he set up his optometry practice and became a passionate supporter of Georgia football, a fervor that only grew stronger over the years.

Georgia’s Director of Sports Medicine, Ron Courson, remembers Dr. Thomas as one of the most generous and kind-hearted individuals he ever met. Gerald’s contributions to sports optometry were pioneering, and his altruism left a lasting impact on the community. He and his wife, Sarah, frequently opened their home to medical staff, coaches, and student trainers, emphasizing the importance of academics and community. An athletic training award bearing his name is presented annually to the graduate student with the highest GPA, a fitting tribute to his commitment to excellence.

Gerald’s kindness extended beyond his professional life. He was known for his acts of generosity, such as giving young staff members money to treat their spouses to a nice dinner. He even adopted and fed stray cats behind his office on Baxter Street, embodying a spirit of care and compassion that touched everyone around him.
